John Carroll Classic Win to Starks
Alger, WA - After a two week absence from the top step of the podium, Trey Starks returned to his winning ways on Saturday night at Skagit Speedway by winning the IRI / Follman Agency John Carroll Classic at Skagit Speedway.
The $5,000 to win John Carroll Classic feature for the Kartmart 410 Sprint Cars began with Robbie Price rocketing out to an early lead with Jesse Scholtfeldt in pursuit. An early caution for last week’s feature winner Landon Brooks brought the field to an early caution and on the subsequent restart, Schlotfeldt made a huge bid for the lead that resulted in his car flipping in turn four, ending his night. Price again set the pace on the restart with Colby Thornhill and Trey Starks following him until a lap 10 caution for three driver wreck slowed the field again. With the Skagit Speedway back straightaway restart in play, Thornhill tried a huge move to the low side of turn four that stuck on the restart, giving him the lead at the conclusion of lap 11. Robbie would also drop a spot to Starks and while trying to roll back forward, spun out on the bottom of turn two on lap 12 to draw another yellow flag. On the next back straightaway restart, it was Starks giving Thornhill a dose of his own medicine, barreling to the inside of corners three and four to take the lead. From there, it was Starks’ race to win as he rolled to victory lane. Jason Solwold and Justin Youngquist had a fantastic battle for second with Youngquist getting the better of Jason at the end. Schlotfeldt was the quick qualifier for the second straight week, while heat wins went to Brooks, Thornhill and Price.
The third week of racing for the Sportsman Sprints gave us our third different winner of the year. Jesson Jacobson pulled off a clean sweep of the night, setting quick time and winning his heat race before leading every lap of the main event unchallenged. Alden Ostrom collected his third podium finish of the year by running second and Chris Foster came home in third place for the second time on the year. Ostrom was the other heat race winner.
The NW Focus Midgets made their 2024 season debut at Skagit Speedway on Saturday night. Ashley Thompson led the first seven laps of the main event before losing the lead to Tanner Holm. Holm held the top spot until lap 18 when something went wrong mechanically on the car, forcing him to the pits. The lead transferred to Hannah Lindquist who had Alex Peck right on her tail. Peck looked for every path past Hannah, but in the end it was Lindquist getting her first win on dirt since a nasty wreck in Placerville in 2019 that cost her a year of her career. Peck would take second and it was Jared Peterson racing from 13th to third rounding out the podium. Heat wins went to Holm, Tyler Luce and Brian Holmkvist.
